When a loved one begins to show signs of cognitive decline, families are often faced with an emotional and confusing journey. Among the various types of dementia, Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) is one of the most misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed. At Dolan Memory Care Homes, we believe that knowledge is empowering—and community is essential.
What Is Lewy Body Dementia?
LBD is caused by abnormal proteins—called Lewy bodies—that disrupt brain cell function, leading to a progressive decline in memory, behavior, and movement. These deposits affect chemicals in the brain, leading to problems with thinking, movement, behavior, and mood.
LBD is the second most common form of progressive dementia after Alzheimer’s disease, yet many people have never heard of it until it affects someone they love. What makes LBD especially challenging is its wide range of symptoms, which can fluctuate daily or even hourly.
Common Symptoms of LBD
- Sensory hallucinations
- Parkinsonian motor symptoms (confusion, stiffness, shuffling gait)
- Cognitive fluctuations (confusion, depression, paranoia, and personality changes that comes and goes)
- REM sleep behavior disorder (acting out dreams, violent dreams, and abnormal sleep)
- Autonomic nervous system issues (blood pressure drops, incontinace problems)
Unlike other forms of dementia, LBD often presents a mix of cognitive, psychiatric, and motor symptoms, which can make diagnosis difficult. It’s not unusual for families to go through a long period of misdiagnosis or uncertainty.
The Challenges for Care Partners
Caring for someone with LBD is uniquely demanding. Sudden changes in cognition, unexpected behavioral symptoms, and increased fall risk can make even the most routine days unpredictable. Many care partners describe feeling isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure where to turn for guidance.
That’s why having a strong support system is not just helpful—it’s vital.
